Jeremiah 31:22

Beth Frost

"How long will thou go about, 0 thou backsliding daughter? For the Lord hath created a new thing in the earth, a woman shall compass a man."

There are three parts to this passage. The first is a question to the children of Israel (or us) asking, how long will they hesitate/wait before seeking God again. The second focuses on the new theme, and the third is a major statement for those times. The passage is clearly stating that God was trying to get the people's attention with this new idea. The women were not used to any status or equality with men. The men were to be the leaders, protectors, and providers. Yet God gave them this new idea of women doing these and leading the people back toward Him.

My original thought on this passage was 'awesome', women surpassing men and a bodybuilder/bodyguard image came to mind. However with study, the thought became more of an equality stand. The King James Version says, "A woman shall compass a man."The word compass comes from the Latin, com-together and passus- a step. God intended for the women to understand that they could circle around the hesitating men, to lead Israel's steps!

Dear Lord, help us to always circle our steps back to you especially when those steps are rough. Amen.
